Shannon Briggs at the hospital after Vitali Klitschko fight

Shannon Briggs has finished in the hospital with an orbital fracture left in his face, nose broken and torn biceps left toe at the foot of the treacherous round 12 against WBC, Vitali Klitschko in Hamburg, Germany heavy weight champion course, according to a report by ESPN.com.

Greg Cohen, Empire of sports and Entertainment promoter told ESPN.com that although Briggs hit fairly poorly, injuries are not mortelles.Briggs is the Hamburg Eppendorf University Hospital.

Briggs, 38, was joking around in the hospital with Cohen after lutte.Par precautionary measure, he was taken to the intensive care. Cohen said that he would not have embarked to Nations Briggs was in serious condition.

"I would be here [in New York] if it was not OK," Cohen said ESPN. "He was in intensive care after the fight for precautionary reasons. Injuries are not mortelles.Il is just struck.»

Klitschko sanctioned Shannon Briggs to 12 rounds brutal Saturday to retain his title of WBC champion with a unanimous decision. Briggs had a round solid in the fifth, but continues to absorb many blows to the Klitschko fight him turn into a punching bag in the last rounds a few.

However, Briggs is never decreased.

Strutting into the stadium dancing and singing, Bafana Bafana turned its final game at the World Cup into a rollicking party for all of South Africa.All that was missing was enough goals to see them through to the next round.

For France, Tuesday’s 2-1 loss completed a miserable meltdown. With each team needing a big win to have any chance of moving on from Group A, both stuck to character. South Africa played eager and aggressive soccer. In the end, neither survived the group stage. But Bafana Bafana players left with their heads held high.

Bongani Khumalo scored in the 20th minute when he outjumped France midfielder Abou Diaby to knock a cross from Siphiwe Tshabalala into the net with his shoulder. Mphela doubled the lead 17 minutes later, outmuscling defender Gael Clichy to reach a low cross from Tsepo Masilela and knock the ball across the line.

Netherlands and Japan failed to impress in the first half, resulting in a 0-0 score at half-time in both side's second match of the group phase. Oranje then broke the deadlock after the break and Japan were unable to restore parity in the remainder of the game.

The Dutch have now collected six points from two games and are sitting in pole position to qualify for the next round. Japan have three points from two matches and need a result in their final match if they are to survive the group stage.

Oranje started the match the better side of the two and got their first chance of the match after eight minutes of play. The referee had no choice but to award the Dutch a free kick in a dangerous position after a foul on Robin van Persie. Wesley Sneijder stepped up to take it, but his shot sailed over the bar. Dirk Kuyt then tried his luck with an acrobatic bicycle kick after a cross from the left, but his shot was blocked by the Japanese defence before being cleared into safety.

The Asians then made a foray into Dutch territory in the 15th minute. Defender Yuji Nakazawa created some space down the left and tried his luck from 25 yards, only to see his shot bounce wide at the far post.

The Dutch did open the score after 53 minutes of play though. The Japanese defence failed to clear the ball and Sneijder fired home the loose ball from the edge of the area. Oranje failed to break through Japan's defense but Sneijder made a goal after the break.

The Ghanaians moved a point above Germany and Serbia after fighting off a determined bid by the Australians, who lost striker Harry Kewell to a red card in a sensational first-half penalty incident.

The Australians, trying to rebuild their World Cup campaign after a shattering 4-0 first-up loss to Germany, now have the tough task of trying to beat Serbia on Wednesday and hope Germany are beaten by Ghana to reach the knockout round.

Ghana hit back to cancel out Australia's 11th-minute opener with striker Asamoah Gyan's 25th-minute penalty and both teams had chances at either end to win the pulsating encounter.Kewell was red carded for handling on the line of Gyan's fierce goal-bound shot - the ball hitting his upper arm. Italian referee Roberto Rosetti immediately pulled out the red card as Kewell and his Australian teammates remonstrated his decision.

Gyan sent Mark Schwarzer the wrong way with his penalty attempt to level the game and leave Australia to play a man down for the remainder of the match.

Germany forward Lucas Podolski is guilty of missing a penalty in their 1-0 defeat against Serbiahas branded himself "the idiot" having failed to convert from the spot.

Joachim Loew's side, reduced to 10 men following the sending off of Miroslav Klose, were beaten thanks to a Milan Jovanovic goal, and despite having chances, the Germans were unable to take anything from the game. Podolski, who has 39 international goals to his name, believes that the team's failure to claim a point from the game is largely his fault.

Germany now have three points from two games and really need a win from their final group game, against Ghana, to qualify for the last 16.

An inefficient England was deadlocked in a 0-0 draw with Algeria after 75 minutes of their World Cup Group C match. England looked far from its best even as the team pressed forward. England’s passing was errant, with midfielder Steven Gerrard particularly wasteful.

Algeria looked happy to sit back and look for opportunities to counterattack, but Rafik Halliche had to be alert to head clear a cross by Aaron Lennon intended for Wayne Rooney. Halliche also blocked a shot by Emile Heskey off a rare England break.

Frank Lampard had the best chance of the match in the first half, but his left-footed shot from 12 meters was well saved by Algeria goalkeeper M’bohi Rais Ouhed.

Maurice Edu kicked the ball into the net just before the 86th minute. American players jumped around wildly, thinking they had capped a historic comeback, turning a two-goal, first-half deficit into a 3-2 victory over Slovenia but referee Koman Coulibaly of Mali had called it off.

It also provided a thrill at a tournament that has seen few surprises and just 25 goals after the first game for all 32 teams. Eren Derdiyok created Switzerland’s big chance in the 52nd minute by surging through the center of Spain’s defense and rounding Iker Casillas. Gerard Pique’s desperate tackle stopped Derdiyok, but Fernandes pounced on the loose ball and forced it into the net.

At the final whistle, Fernandes fell to his knees and raised both arms to the sky. The entire team then went to the small section of Swiss fans in the Moses Mabhida Stadium and saluted them as they cheered and rang alpine cow bells.

Chile secured a first World Cup win in 48 years by edging Honduras 1-0 on Wednesday through a late first-half goal from striker Jean Beausejour.

Chile began brightly as they sought a fourth victory in six clashes with the Hondurans and midfielder Matias Fernandez went close off a third-minute free kick. Chile were on top territorially and it took Honduras 18 minutes to create an opening close to goal only for 101-cap Carlos Pavon to disappoint with a weak shot that trickled wide.

Persistent Chile pressure finally paid off when slick passing outside the penalty area created space for Mauricio Isla on the right flank and his low cross was turned in by Mexico-based Beausejour. Honduras pushed Edgar Alvarez forward for the second half but the early exchanges followed a similar pattern to the first 45 minutes with Chile exerting far more pressure as they sought the cushion of a two-goal advantage.

Germany began their quest for a fourth World Cup in devastating style Sunday with a 4-0 victory over Australia in their opening Group D match.

Forwards Lukas Podolski and Miroslav Klose gave their side a 2-0 halftime lead. Australia, who started both halves brightly and battled gamely throughout, played the last 34 minutes with 10 men after Tim Cahill was dismissed for clattering into Bastian Schweinsteiger.

In the eighth minute, Ozil found Mueller in what looked to be an offside position and his cutback allowed Podolski to smash the ball into the net via Mark Schwarzer’s flailing arm. Klose should have doubled the lead in the 24th minute but he blasted wide when Podolski’s cross left him free in front of goal. With the Australian spirit sapped in the second half by Cahill’s sending off, Mueller got his reward for a fine performance on the right flank when he found space in the box and screwed the ball into the net off the post in the 68th minute. Cacau, who had just replaced Klose, completed the scoring two minutes later after Ozil had beaten the offside trap to play in the striker to drill the ball into the net.

The opening game of World Cup Group D was won by Ghana, who scored a late penalty to win over Serbia whose lack of discipline was ultimately decisive.

The first half failed to produce any goals, there were chances at either end. It was an inauspicious start for the Ghanaians, but they would soon enjoy efforts of their own through a spectacular long-range volley from Anthony Annan and a free kick hit wastefully over the top by Asamoah Gyan. With quarter of an hour gone, a fierce driven centre from Kwadwo Asamoah had to be blocked away from the six-yard box by Nikola Zigic following a corner kick, continuing the upbeat and open beginning in Pretoria.

Serbian's defense was under pressure from Ghana’s relentless attack. A moment of madness from Zdravko Kuzmanovic cost the Europeans as he inexplicably handled a long cross in the box. From the penalty spot, Gyan cracked a shot into the top left hand corner.

Kuzmanovic had a shot at immediate redemption but leaned back and shot hopelessly over from the edge of the penalty box, consigning Serbia to an opening game loss, though it could have been heavier as Gyan struck the post in stoppage time.

In a world title unification, Bradley defeated Kendall Holt on April 4 to capture the WBO belt. Less than a month later, Bradley chose to voluntarily relinquish the WBC strap that Alexander and Witter will be vying for.

“I just found out a few days ago that I’ll be in my first world championship match against Junior Witter on Aug. 1,” Alexander said. “I am so thrilled to be fighting for a world title and against Witter, a fighter I respect. He’s already had the title we’re fighting for, and I feel like it’s my turn now. I’m not stopping my undefeated run for anyone. Classy boxer-puncher Delvin Rodriguez has been seeking a breakthrough type of fight for some time, and he has had to travel to South Africa for his opportunity.

Rodriguez, the 28-year-old from Connecticut, meets Isaac Hlatswayo in an IBF welterweight title elimination match at the Emperors Palace casino hotel in Kempton Park on Monday — a championship chance against Joshua Clottey awaits the winner.

Hlatswayo, 31, is the slight favourite based on the fight’s location. Rodriguez has some advantages, though. He is younger and taller — and he’s also a 147-pounder meeting a boxer who was fighting at 140 pounds just a couple of years ago. In addition to this, Rodriguez clearly seems to be the puncher in the fight.

A slight concern is that Rodriguez’s last fight saw his opponent, Oscar Diaz, collapse afterwards and undergo brain surgery. It put a sad postscript on what had been a superb performance by Rodriguez, and one must wonder if the fight will have any effect on the way he performs against Hlatswayo. When something such as this happens, a fighter can usually come to terms with the situation by knowing that what happened was just an accident, but you never know. Fighters react to these things in different ways.

Pacquiao vs Cotto set on Nov. 14

It matters little to Top Rank promoter Bob Arum that Manny Pacquiao and Miguel Cotto are each regarded as among the world’s 10 finest boxers. Arum is simply thrilled that the fight between them that he finalized last week while on vacation in Israel and Italy will, in fact, be a fight.

rum said Monday that Pacquiao and Cotto will meet in a fight with a 145-pound weight limit on Nov. 14 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas on HBO Pay Per View.

The bout and the date had been long rumored, but the hang-up was getting the men to agree on a weight. Cotto holds the World Boxing Organization welterweight belt and has difficulty going much below 147.

Pacquiao, who still has only had three of his 54 bouts above 130 pounds, preferred it to be as low as possible and no higher than 144. Cotto’s physical trainer said he couldn’t safely fight below 145 pounds and Pacquiao ultimately agreed to the weight.

Arum expects the fight to perform as well at the gate as Pacquiao’s dominating second-round stoppage of Ricky Hatton, which produced $8.9 million in ticket revenue at the MGM Grand Garden, but he’s hopeful it will exceed it in pay-per-view sales.

David Beckham returns to Major League Soccer

Los Angeles midfielder David Beckham returned to the Home Depot Center on Saturday night to watch his Galaxy teammates beat Chivas USA. Beckham will rejoin the Galaxy for training this week to prepare for his long-awaited return in a nationally televised match in New York on Thursday night.

As always, Beckham didn't slip in the back door quietly.

In some ways, the destiny of the Galaxy's near future presents a question no one can predict because Beckham is a unique phenomenon who creates a wide-ranging impact that can't be quantified by anticipation.

Only four things about Beckham's return appear certain right now: (1) Beckham will apply himself on the field – barring injury – to wade off Donovan's accusations of poor professionalism and maintain his place in the England squad; (2) Donovan will try to find a way to achieve some sort of truce with Beckham, even if the reconciliation only repairs the relationship to the point where the duo can share the same field; (3) the Galaxy players will take time to adjust on and off the field to the white hot glare Beckham brings wherever he goes; and (4) Galaxy coach Bruce Arena will face the biggest coaching challenge of his career as he integrates Beckham and all of his trappings into a cohesive and workmanlike Galaxy unit already pushing for a playoff berth.

Everything else surrounding Beckham's return is open to debate, interpretation and speculation. To help with that parlor game, I exchanged e-mails with Wahl to get his take on the situation.

Cro Cop Returning to UFC

Heavyweight contender Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic has signed a three- fight contract extension with the Ultimate Fighting Championship, UFC president Dana White said on Monday.

Several days after the initial reports, Sergio Non of USA Today reported that DREAM official Mike Kogan confirmed that Filipovic would fight on its July 20 show. A fight between Filipovic and “Mighty” Mo Siligia briefly appeared on DREAM’s website as scheduled for July 20.

But Filipovic never signed the DREAM contract and opted instead to honor the agreement he made over the telephone with White. Filipovic’s first bout on the extension will be against Junior dos Santos at UFC 103 in Dallas on Sept. 19.

“I never had a problem with Mirko himself and I’m looking forward to having him fight for us again,” White said. “He’s said (his previous stint in) the UFC is the black mark on his career and he wants to do something about that.”

British boxing star Amir Khan is ready to take a big step on boxing history as he takes on WBA Light Welterweight champion from Ukraine, Andreas Kotelnik this July 18 at Manchester Evening News Arena, England.

Khan is a former 2004 silver medalist in Olympic boxing has shown readiness to dethrone Andreas Kotelnik in his biggest fight in his life.

Khan was touted as the next Manny "Pacman" Pacquiao because of his lightning speed and power vowed to give his 100 percent effort to become a world champion.

Meanwhile Andreas Kotelnik has been training behind closed doors, the ukrainian has resumed sparring after pulling the original fight date on June 27.

"I don't want to say too much, I just want to say, 'Hey, I'll see you in the ring."

"For us we don't want to show our tactics or training on the pads or sparring."

Newly crowned WBC featherweight champ Takahiro Aoh, a Japanese southpaw fighter that will risk his belt against the challenger Elio Rojas in his first defense in Tokyo, Japan, on July 14. Aoh, formerly six-time national high school champ, impressively captured the throne via lopsided decision over veteran Mexican warrior Oscar Larios in a grudge fight last March.

In a press conference, Aoh said “I welcome this opportunity to defend my belt against the strong challenger. I’ll fight as if I were a challenger.” This could be a good fight seeing Japanese boxers dominate world titles in this sport.

Kobe Bryant always admired that Ron Artest never acted like he wanted an autograph when duty demanded that he defend him. He loved that Artest was combustible and crazy and always left people wondering: Is this the moment when Ron-Ron loses his mind again, when all hell breaks loose?

Deep down, Bryant wanted Artest on his side. Artest gives a thirtysomething Kobe what Dennis Rodman gave a thirtysomething Michael Jordan: A belligerent, tough guy bearing the burden of protecting the superstar’s back.

And as far back as the Western Conference playoffs, the Lakers believed Artest wanted to trade Houston for Hollywood, that the Rockets’ decaying cornerstone of Yao Ming and Tracy McGrady turned that team into a temporary rehab assignment.

“If they couldn’t get Trevor [Ariza] cheap,” said a source with knowledge of the Lakers’ free-agent plans, “they had Ron in their back pocket.”

And maybe, in some ways, that won’t be the worst thing in the world for the Lakers. Chaos? The 140-pound bout featured five knockdowns and several wild momentum swings that both thrilled and stunned a Staples Center crowd of 8,600 expecting to witness another step in the evolution of the 22-year-old Ortiz, a charismatic slugger ticketed for stardom by promoter Oscar De La Hoya.

Maidana was knocked down three times in the opening two rounds, yet rallied with a devastating right hand that turned Ortiz’s face into a mess. After Ortiz stumbled to the canvas early in the sixth, the ringside doctor stopped the fight.

“I knew I was fighting against the local guy, and I had to knock him out,” said Maidana, whose only previous loss was a contentious split decision to Andreas Kotelnik earlier this year. “I went down, but I got up because I have a big heart. In the wake of the United States men’s football team’s 2-0 victory over Spain in the Confederations Cup semifinals on Wednesday, what passes for America’s soccer media had a fine debate over where the win ranked all time. They came in all over the map.

Make no mistake about this, though, if the U.S. can defeat Brazil on Sunday for the Confederations Cup title, it will be the most important moment for soccer in this country ever.

That may not mean the same as its most significant victory. Defeating Mexico in the World Cup en route to a quarterfinals appearance may have meant more in pure soccer terms.

Actually winning a real FIFA tournament, however, and defeating major world powers to do it would serve notice to Americans that America’s team is worth their attention.

Shane Mosley said he wants to fight Manny Pacquiao so whoever wins will get to face the winner of the Floyd Mayweather-Juan Manuel Marquez showdown which was recently postponed and tentatively rescheduled to September.

“Yeah, that is the perfect scenario. That’s the way it is supposed to happen in real boxing,” Mosley, the 38-year-old WBA welterweight champion from California, told fighthype.com as he continued to beg for a fight with Pacquiao.

Mosley has practically swallowed everything in seeking the fight with Pacquiao, announcing that he’s agreeable to a catchweight under 147 lb (the welterweight limit), put his belt on the line, and settle for 40 percent of the earnings.
